We released 'Hunger', our first 'proper' EP, ten years ago today. We must have started the band about three years before that in the town of Barnstaple of North Devon, a place where we didn't quite fit in. We once played someones birthday party in a field in a gazebo and it was raining like a war outside. We opened our set with a cover of 100% by Sonic Youth and cleared the tent, people preferring to be soaked in rain rather than (what looking back was definitely terrible) noise. We played a few of our (probably terrible) own songs and the people began to crawl back in hoping for some respite so we finished with 100% again and everyone was just really pissed off and cold at us so we promptly left to go and play another birthday party. This one was inside where later on at some point someone (not one of us) tried to cook a birds eye frozen chicken fillet in a toaster.
Now, none of this really has anything to do with the Hunger EP but these posts usually have a nice bit of nostalgia at the start and thought that night was a better story than us having a meeting before making any music about the direction of the band and the CDs I brought along were Wild Beasts, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Frightened Rabbit. Thankfully it didn't quite turn out like that. After this period we moved to Bristol to follow our dream of rock. The dream was just to play some shows where there wasn't the risk of a ska trumpet being launched at our heads, and in this respect our dreams came true. Just a pint glass in Reading a few years later.
We also met a load of musicians and bands who made us feel giddy an inadequate who made us buck our ideas up and try and write some decent songs, and these tracks became Hunger. We recorded this EP in 2 days in George's (Velcro Hooks, Heavy Lungs) bedroom and I still have no idea how on earth Dom (Velcro Hooks, now in Spectres) managed to make the record sound like it does with a few mics and a laptop. My hazy memories feature a mattress as a sound divider (definitely not the correct term but hopefully makes sense) and also some curtains blocking sound bleed.
Maybe You Shouldn't Be Living here was just an improvised jam that we recorded in one take, the title coming from the venerated Pierce Brosnan line in Taffin as we were listening to the Adam & Joe show section about it at the time so called it that. It ended up being a centrepiece for our live set for years, still playing it last year in fact. It's hard to imagine this happening now. A load of mates pissing about in a very cheap house in central Bristol, making a disgusting noise for two days without being arrested under the criminal justice bill. I did the vocals in Oliver Wilde's (Oliver Wilde / Pet Shimmers / Oro Swimming Hour) bedroom a few days later which must have been really fun for him. James Hankins made a video for Rattle The Cage and we paid him in a Za Za Bazaar all you can eat buffet. Friends let us use a temporary gallery to film that and then the video for Threshing Machine, that ends with a load of us running around like schoolchildren on a particularly fun lunchbreak. Yes what I am getting at here is that times were simpler then and we are all now old and haggard but we still have the FIRE (more on that later this year)!
I remember reading the Dom Gourlay Drowned in Sound 9/10 review in between serving people at the cafe I worked at and I was trembling like spaghetti in the wind. That website was the big one. It introduced me to so much music that I still love and thankfully we didn't end up sounding like because that clearly wasn't us. That review let us know that we were doing something right, and it gave us the confidence to go do it some more. And we have done for another ten years and bloody hell that was a ramble sorry. Hunger is ten years old today and we've found some old records that you can buy. It can be downloaded for free for the next ten years. Thanks to everyone for letting us be a band for this long. (Joe)

We snuck a copy of this EP into an order Sonic Cathedral placed with Howling Owl, it changed our little musical lives. Nat made some CD copies for special pre-orders of Dying. He found a spool of 20 recently so we'll repackage them nicely and finally let go.

Unique and often mysteriously intriguing, the sounds of LMTO are captivating in their stark beauty and sonic strength. This album is full of ideas and disparate elements merging into atmospheric bliss. Enthralling! Michael Reilly
